Bizarre lighting question. (x-posted).

Hello,
Sorry for the x-post, hoping someone will have what I am looking for.

Is there a lighting system which slowly turns on in the morning and off in
the evening to simulate sunset? I know with say for example a standard
house light can have a dimmer switch installed, but does such a thing exist
for the aquarium?

I have not yet googled for it, if anyone has seen one or actually has one, I
would love to hear what you think.

Gary.

Most types of lights known to man suffer greatly at the "hands" of
dimmer switches. Ballasts are designed to be run at a certain
voltage, and 'ramping' that voltage will ruin your equipment, IMO.
Most reefers simply seperate thier lights. i.e.: have a small bank of
actinics come on a 7am, then the HO's an hour later. Then the Halides
an hour after that, and reverse in the evening. I seriously doubt
your critters would realize the un-natural-ness of it, unless the
fishkeeper is the one who desires the effect .<g>

My Halides naturally take about four minutes to go from "off" to full light
output.

Yes, only if the light is using a dimmable ballast and then you need a compatible dimming
switch. There are used for MH also.
