Jewfish Renamed?

I read somewhere recently that the jewfish had been renamed
because the species' original name was supposedly offensive
and anti-Semitic.

This aroused my curiosity. It seems to me that whether the
original species name was actually offensive would depend on
what perceived characteristic of Jewish people the fish was
named for, and how typical that characteristic is in real life.

It naturally follows that even the if characteristic in question
were unflattering, there'd be no grounds for objecting to it if
it were true.

Any thoughts on this?
